Dolce & Gabbana's Fairy-Tale Fantasy

Feb 29, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

Every girl wants to be a princess—that was the thought process behind Dolce & Gabbana’s new Fall 2016 collection. Instead of taking us to the streets of Sicily (again) Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce dropped us firmly between the pages of our favorite fairy tales. The runway was filled with references to Cinderella, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland and Sleeping Beauty, reimagined for fashionable fantasy lovers.... Read More

Dsquared2 Sends Their Models Into Combat

Feb 29, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

“It’s a warrior world,” Dan Caten said backstage of the Dsquared2 Fall 2016 collection. Brothers Dan and Dean Caten offered up a lineup of fashionable combat wear inspired by military, Victorian and samurai aesthetics. Drawing partially from the aristocratic designs of last year’s Fall 2015 collection and the Japanese influences in their Fall 2016 menswear line, the collection was a mashup derived from their previous work that surprisingly, worked well together.... Tod's Pushes the Envelope Too Far

Feb 26, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

Before the show began, Tod’s paid tribute to the artisans that hand-make their Italian leather pieces with an installation by performance artist Vanessa Beecroft. Karlie Kloss was lying on a wooden table as craftsmen sewed her into her cognac leather ensemble. Models surrounded her, draped in pieces of unfinished leather as if they were awaiting their turn on the table.... Read More

Alberta Ferretti's Boudoir Dreams

Feb 25, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

As a designer who’s known for her use of delicate fabrics like tulle, lace and silk, Alberta Ferretti took her feminine trope one step farther this season with a line of gowns and eveningwear inspired by the bedroom. Using the same aesthetics that make her line so popular with the red carpet crowd, she used pajamas, lingerie and undergarments to add a tasteful touch of romance to her Fall 2016 collection.... Fendi Scientifically Executes a Must-Have Collection

Feb 25, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

In a rare moment, the scientific and fashion community overlapped on the Fendi runway today when Karl Lagerfeld sent a collection of frills and ruffles down the catwalk. “They’re not ruffles, they’re waves,” the designer corrected backstage before the show, making reference to electric and gravitational waves that he translated into an entire show of rippled fabric.... Feb 24, 2016  |   Contributor: Kelly O'Reilly

As the dust settles in NYC and Fashion Month marches on in London, various trends are emerging on the runway for the coming seasons. But delving far deeper than simply looking gorgeous on the catwalk is fashion technology and interactive designer Birce Ozkan, whose naturally intuitive and cutting-edge work is at the intersection of innovation and style.... Faustine Steinmetz Fights Against Fast Fashion

Feb 23, 2016  |   Contributor: Kelly O'Reilly

In the fashion industry, where fast battles sustainable, Faustine Steinmetz remains steadfast in her hand-weaving, following up her initial collection of artfully sculpted recycled denim with an equally careful construction of ready-to-wear in eco-friendly cotton, neoprene, and mohair. From her small atelier in East London, the designer creates on a minimal footprint and in doing so, creates upended silhouettes enriched by unexpected textures.... Read More

Julien Macdonald Does Not Design for the Average Woman

Feb 22, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

Beyoncé looks killer in a skin-baring, bedazzled mini dress, but not everyone can pull off such a theatrical design. Julien Macdonald, on the other hand, thinks the look was made for the masses. As is his forte, the designer sent skintight dresses, barely-there fabrics and a series of strategically cut out numbers down the Fall 2016 runway.... Read More

J.W. Anderson Declares Fashion an Art Form

Feb 22, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

“I love fashion! It should be fashion,” Jonathan Anderson declared backstage before the start of his J.W. Anderson Fall 2016 runway show. This season he captured that sentiment beautifully. He’s no stranger to quirky, sometimes awkward outfits, but this weekend he took them to a new level, trading in what little simplicity he had left for something that would capture the eye and evoke the imagination.... J. Mendel Finds Restraint on the Runway

Feb 22, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

Fur, embellishments and metallic fabrics might seem like an ultra-lush collection for most ready-to-wear lines, but for Gilles Mendel it’s par for the course. For the Fall 2016 J. Mendel line, he chose to simplify his usual aesthetic and designed the silhouettes to be chic, effortless and uncomplicated—though the same can’t be said for anything else in the collection.... Delpozo's Dystopian Runway

Feb 18, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

At first glance, the Fall 2016 Delpozo runway seemed like just another beautifully imaginative rendition from creative director Josep Font. But this season the bright colors and floral detailing was inspired by the urban dystopia of Metropolis, the 1927 sci-fi film, and the dark digital illustrations of Daria Pertilli, an Italian artist whose surreal work focuses on women surrounded by nature.... Noon by Noor Matures for Fall 2016

Feb 17, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

Cousins Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa are no strangers to loud prints, bold colors and modest cuts, which is why their Noon by Noor Fall 2016 collection came as such a surprise. Gone were the bright shades and quirky designs, and in their place were subdued tones, voluminous shapes and patterns in the form of embellishment and texture.... Read More

Rag & Bone DGAF

Feb 17, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

For years the Rag & Bone runway has been a NYFW favorite. Not only do designers David Neville and Marcus Wainwright know how to put on a show, but they know how to create a collection that people want. Nothing is too conceptual, everything is easy to wear and it’s just plain cool. This season for Fall 2016, they put on a joint men’s and womenswear show, with a live percussion performance from Mauro Refosco and Joey Waronker from Atoms for Peace.... Read More

See The 23 Best and Worst Dressed on the 2016 Grammys Red Carpet

Feb 16, 2016  |   Contributor: JL Staff

The Grammys red carpet is known for being pretty hit or miss and last night was a perfect example of the power of a good (or bad) dress. Celebrities were either a total win or an absolute disaster—there was no in between. And sorry Taylor Swift, but you’ve made the worst-dressed list this season. That pink Versace Atelier number is doing you zero favors.... Read More

Minsoo Chung's Latest Falls Flat

Feb 15, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

For Fall 2016, O’2nd’s brand director Minsoo Chung presented a line of ready-to-wear pieces lightly influenced by the Victorian era. Ruffles and puffs were added to the shoulders, while sweet lace collars gave overlooked basics a romantic upgrade. Antique touches were light handed, giving the collection a subtle vintage feel instead of a more blatant play on inspiration.... Read More

Moncler Grenoble Forces Fashion Insiders into the Freezing Night

Feb 15, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

An icy evening in the middle of February might seem like the perfect place to showcase a collection of high-performance winter active wear, but for the guests that had to suffer through the freezing outdoor display at Moncler Grenoble’s Fall 2016 show, it was anything but. As industry insiders huddled together for warmth, the models walked the terraces at Lincoln Center, looking cozy and content in layers of fur and down outerwear.... Read More

Wes Gordon Eschews the Traditional Runway for Instagram

Feb 12, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

The hot topic of the season has been the idea of restructuring the classic Fashion Week model, and today Wes Gordon joined the ranks of designers forgoing the traditional runway. For Fall 2016, he presented his collection entirely online in a series of nine GIFs posted to his Instagram account. “It can be kind of limiting—four white walls, six minutes to tell our story,” Gordon told WWD. “There are 600 shows on the calendar. As a smaller brand, it’s an opportunity to be mobile, do something different.”... Read More

Marissa Webb’s Everyday Runway Packs a Punch

Feb 12, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

At previous stages in her career, Marissa Webb has designed for J Crew and Banana Republic, so she has a talent for understanding what the everyday woman is looking for in a wardrobe. This was visible in her Fall 2016 collection, a line of simplistic separates that were created for practicality rather than flair. This isn’t to say the collection lacked appeal. On the contrary, most of the collection felt beautiful and stylish, but the streamlined, floor-length coats, windowpane plaid suits and chunky knit turtlenecks were intended for a more sophisticated palette.... Artistic Ingenuity on the BCBG Runway

Feb 11, 2016  |   Contributor: JL Staff

Max and Lubov Azria’s BCBG Fall 2016 was a beautiful respite from the traditionally feminine pieces that the brand is known for. This season felt fresh with an architecturally-designed line of asymmetrical sweaters, raw denim, patchwork knits and angular cuts. The use of unexpected fabrics like gold Lurex and funky pieces like slashed leggings gave the line a youthful, almost rebellious vibe.... Read More

A Collection Embodying the Absence of Light

Feb 10, 2016  |   Contributor: JL Staff

It would be a mistake to think that major brands are the highlight of NYFW. Hidden amongst the Alexander Wangs and Ralph Laurens there’s an entire subcategory of up-and-coming names that are showcasing some truly conceptual designs. Katie Gallagher’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection, Veiled, is a monochromatic line of black silk, lambskin, buckskin, pony hair, velvet and lace that captures the originality that some of the more seasoned designers are lacking.... Feb 8, 2016  |   Contributor: JL Staff

Truth be told, we don’t pay much attention to our horoscopes, but there’s nothing like a fashionable collection to get us hooked on astrology. Christian Louboutin and Moda Operandi have partnered together to create a limited-edition, capsule line of zodiac-inspired footwear. The Zodiac Collection will be available in three colorways—black, navy and wine—and will be decorated in gold and silver thread.... Read More

Bright Colors Were the Rage on the SAG Red Carpet

Feb 1, 2016  |   Contributor: JL Staff

The great thing about awards season is seeing our favorite celebrities hit the red carpet in some of the most elegant dresses we’ve ever seen. But that didn’t happen at this weekend’s SAG Awards. Instead we got something much better. What is normally a parade of safe black and white gowns transformed into a daring rainbow of color, from deep cerulean to a touch of pale lavender.... Read More
