3 Easy Ways to Rock '80s Fashion Today

If you weren't fortunate enough to live through the '80s (or if you were too young to really embrace all bold fashion this decade had to offer) now's the time to get on board. The '80s were by far the last century's brightest, loudest and most daring decade when it comes style. In fact, some might say it was too loud. Women and men alike could easily go through a container of hairspray a week just trying to maintain their funky feathered coifs. The later part of the decade introduced us to retina-burning neon clothing, which would stick around into the early '90s. Still, there was a lot to love about the 1980s, which is why many '80s fashion trends are back in. Here’s how you can rock them today:

Shoulder Power

Shoulder pads were one of the biggest—if not the definitive—fashion trend of the '80s. It was all about empowering women; there were more women than ever in the workplace, and girls were unapologetic about their new found power. To own this trend in 2017, select jackets, blazers, coats and vests with killer shoulder silhouettes. Word to the wise: make sure your pick is belted or has a defined waist because otherwise you’ll look like your material is devouring you.

Color Crazy

The 80s were built on bold colors, so now's the time to move beyond the black and neutrals that define your wardrobe. You don't have to achieve carnival status with your style, but grab a few statement pieces to add to your rotation. Think fuschia, yellow, red and peacock blue. These are colors that are bright enough to fit into the trend, as well as your existing wardrobe.

Sequins

Sequins were big in the '80s, and while they never totally went out of style, they were used sparingly in the '90s. However, they are back and better than ever—especially when they appear in those bold colors we were talking about. Whether you covet a dress, top, skirt, pair of pants or shorts, a well-chosen sequin piece or two will instantly infuse your look with pure '80s.

Before you go raiding vintage stores (or your mother’s closet) in search of authentic garb, keep in mind the fashion trends of today have simply been inspired by that decade. They have been adjusted to fit the aesthetics of here and now. Real garb from the '80s will appear dated, so forgo the thrift store and seek out these looks from today’s coolest designers.
