The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is made up of more than 700 islands, and the archipelago boasts great weather, unforgettable beaches and friendly people. Just 50 miles from the coast of Florida, the islands are easy to get to but feel like a world away because of their unique ambiance. Here are five reasons you should book a vacation to this Caribbean gem.

1. Perfect Pure White Sand

The islands are famous for their beaches of white sand. With a year-round water temperature averaging 80 F, you’ll love diving into the clear turquoise waters along the islands’ coasts. The Bahamas have spectacular stretches of uncrowded beaches, and you’ll find one perfect for your vacation whether you’re into watersports, family fun or relaxing in an exclusive locale.

2. Tasty Tropical Cuisine

The islands’ chefs excel at preparing fresh seafood. Lobster, red snapper, yellowtail and grouper are among the tasty temptations you’ll find in both casual and high-end restaurants, but you can’t leave the Bahamas without trying the local favorite: conch fritters. There’s no shortage of spicy, exotic dishes when you’re making the rounds through the eateries, but if you should get a craving for a taste of home, you can find American meals spiced up with local ingredients. Wash everything down with the tropical, fruity drinks for which the islands are known.

3. The Bahamas Have a Fascinating Culture and History

The Bahamas are steeped in traditions from both African and British cultures. Even though Christopher Columbus was the first European to meet the Lukku-Cairis, the islands’ original inhabitants, the Spanish never settled in the Bahamas. Instead, it was the English that claimed the islands, and British residents and African slaves made up the population. Slaves were emancipated in the 1830s, and the islands gained peaceful independence from the British in 1973. Today, the population of the Bahamas is around 325,000 and 85 percent claim an African heritage. The Bahamas boast several music and dance festivals that celebrate the islands’ cultural heritage. Junkanoo, as the festivals are called, are a major attraction for both residents and visitors.

4. High-End Resorts Cater to Fun and Relaxation

The Bahamas have several four- and five-star establishments that feature the ultimate in laidback luxury, modern amenities and family-friendly activities. Playing in a water park, sipping a tropical concoction under palm trees or rejuvenating with a spa treatment are just a few of the perks of staying at a well-appointed Caribbean resort.

5. Attractions Abound in the Bahamas

From exploring the capital city of Nassau, to uncovering the historical shipwrecks of the Tears of Allah and the Santa Maria Teresa, the islands are endlessly fascinating. History buffs will find the Pirates of Nassau Museum spellbinding, while divers love the barrier reefs off of Andros. There are an endless number of ways you can explore the islands. Those who are excited to swim with the sea turtles, dolphins and tropical fish will be elated at the most recent and wildly popular attraction of swimming with pigs. The uninhabited island of Big Major Cay is home to these lovable creatures and is affectionately known as “Pig Beach.”

Whether you prefer a vacation with lots of activities or one that features more relaxing pursuits, the Bahamas has it all.
