A luxurious stay in Lyme Regis

The view from the garden of Alexandra Hotel

Alexandra Hotel

Lyme Regis is treasure of a place: ultra traditional, without being quaint or pompous. It is a seaside town steeped in history from the Cobbs canons, still aimed at the Armada of 1688, to the ammonites on the Duke of Monmouth’s landing beach.

There are countless pleasurable ways in which to while away an afternoon here: strolling along the beach front, meandering through the maze of winding lanes in the town, or purchasing a special something for your four-legged friend in the delightful pet shop, Pug & Puffin. Perch on the rocks down by Gun Cliff with some local cider (this is the West country, after all), search for anemones and hermit crabs in the cavernous rock pools, before heading over to Langmoor Gardens for Crazy Golf.

Poised on the Jurassic cliff overlooking the picturesque Cobb Harbour and UNESCO world heritage site azure expanse of Lyme Bay sits the Alexandra Hotel and Restaurant – our home for the weekend. Bereft of any pretension or formality, the Alexandra has struck a balance between cosy seaside holiday home and charming boutique hotel. Originally built in 1735 as a residence for a countess, the hotel is reassuringly old fashioned, elegant and well maintained. The property is set within beautiful gardens that lead down to the beach beneath, and each of the hotel’s rooms offer a sea view.

Our room was located on the top floor of the property, and, whilst small, was equipped with the comfiest bed

Whilst the location and view are reasons enough to recommend a visit, the Alexandra has made a name for itself as a true foodie destination. My husband and I enjoyed a sensational lunch on the garden deck of the hotel’s award-winning Alexandra Restaurant, outside in the glorious sunshine.Executive Chef Catalin Geanta has created a menu that is both local and in-season – always a recipe for success. The Lyme Bay scallops with roasted cauliflower puree and truffle oil were particularly good, as was the West Bay Gurnard.

If you are looking for boutique chic by the sea, Lyme Regis and The Alexandra tick all the right boxes.
