Anniesa Hasibuan, an Indonesian fashion designer, recently showed her new line of modestly-draped garments at New York Fashion week with all the models dressed in hijab, the traditional Islamic head covering, in her show at Moynihan Station on September 12. Muted pastel-hued satin and chiffon headscarves in silver, gold, and pink were paired with delicately embellished gowns, kimonos, capes, suits, and tunics. Haute Hijab also noted that the colorful silks, brocades and velvets of the collection were ornamented with fine sequin work, pearls, and lace. All the items in the collection featured modestly long lengths, long sleeves, and layers.

The layered modest movement is a trend that is catching on in high fashion as more and more designers and design houses are realizing that there’s big money to be made in many predominantly Muslim countries. These markets have largely been ignored for decades and left to their own devices and own designers. However, all that is changing as new designers keep luxury-craving populations in mind and design modest lines and couture collections for the discerning Muslim clients with a need for modest clothing options. The show follows a release of a couture abaya and hijab collection in blacks and beiges earlier this year by Dolce & Gabbana.

Hasibuan’s line of clothing and capes were elegant in and of themselves. But what absolutely made the collection stand out, and earned her a standing ovation, was her determination to have all her models wear hijab on the runway. This bold decision is one that will hopefully help to normalize headscarves as a religious freedom of women worldwide. Its use in a runway show during New York Fashion Week was also testament to how far Muslim women have come.
