As a major cultural hub, Chicago has no shortage of galleries, museums and festivals, but one of it’s biggest street fairs, dedicated to artistry worldwide, is coming to the windy city this November. SOFA Chicago, the Sculpture, Objects, Functional Art & Design event, will be held at the Navy Pier’s Festival Hall November 7-9 with a preview night on November 6. Entering its 21st year, the event is popular worldwide and features galleries from all over the globe including Beaver Galleries in Australia, Flow Gallery in the United Kingdom, Ippodo Gallery in Japan, Officine Saffi in Italy and various artisans from the States. Over 70 galleries will be on display showcasing works of glass, ceramic, metal, textiles and wood.
In addition to the world-renowned galleries, the event will also be holding a design competition for six of the most prestigious design and art schools in the country. The Corning Museum of Glass will put on a show of sorts, glassmaking live for fair-goers and artisans alike. While some art will be available for purchase (get there early to snag the best pieces), there will also be museum-style presentations for those wanting to see rare and historic fine art. The event will also host lectures by artists, critics, designers and collectors.
SOFA Chicago is open Friday and Saturday 11 am–7 pm; and Sunday 12 pm–6pm. Tickets are $15 for general admission; $25 for three-day pass. Students and senior (with ID), and group (10 or more) are $12.
