As a tourist destination, most people don't really look at Miami as a place to check out great live theater, dance, or performing arts in general, but that doesn't stop the Florida city from having a wonderful collection of shows going on throughout the year that will satiate your need for arts, culture, and giving a helping hand.

 

     The Springs River Festival may have retired from coordinating the well-known local annual festival but it has kept active its nonprofit status to support organizations that make our world a better place.

    Springs River Festival, d/b/a SRFBrowncoats, is excited about its new project, “Can’t Stop the Serenity” a worldwide event which organizes screenings of Joss Whedon’s movie “Serenity.”

    This is the eighth year for the global event, but the first one in Miami-Dade County. Connie Brandenburg, a longtime volunteer and the chairperson of the committee, helped organize these events for the past six years in Fort Lauderdale, but she has always wanted to bring one closer to home. MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Miami City Ballet will be previewing its company premiere of "West Side Story Suite" with one of the Broadway musical's original stars.

Tony Award-winner Chita Rivera will join the dance company for a discussion about the ballet that choreographer Jerome Robbins created from his work for the musical. Rivera played the character of Anita when "West Side Story" debuted on stage in 1957.

Rivera's presentation will be part of the ballet company's "Open Barre" series at its Miami Beach studios. The Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 events will include live performances from the ballet. Read More

 

1. Antony and Cleopatra

Miami’s soaring young playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney crafts a set-in-Haiti version of William Shakespeare’s turbulent history play, moving the action to the late 1700s on the eve of the Haitian revolution. The production is a collaborative effort by the Royal Shakespeare Company, New York’s Public Theater and South Florida’s GableStage, which will present the play at the roomier Colony Theatre on Miami Beach. McCraney’s newest work is part of another strong GableStage season, one that includes Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop (March 15-April 13 )and this year’s best play Tony Award winner, Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (May 17-June 15).
