Staycations are on the rise in the UK – whether that means a bump in used caravans for sale and family-oriented holiday parks run by groups like Park Resorts, to the boutique and off-the-beaten track glampsites dotted around the farms and national parks of the UK.

This trend seems to be visible most of all in Wales. According to a survey conducted by the TripAdvisor group, 9.7 million visitors stayed at least one night in Wales in 2011, spending over £1.7 billion – with north Wales and the Brecon Beacons featuring heavily.

These figures show an 11.9% rise on 2010’s visitor numbers, and no doubt Away From It All, situated on the dramatic Lleyn Peninsula near Snowdon, is hoping to benefit from increased tourism and local interest.

Away From It All is a small luxury campsite consisting of 2 geodesic domes, complete with double bed. The domes themselves are on slightly raised wooden platforms; and our favourite feature is the clear window to one side, which gives stunning views of the Peninsula and the Snowdonia National Park at its feet.

The domes sleep up to 4 people – though we think it’s cosy for 2; we’d take kids, but 4 adults in there will bring you closer to the feel of regular camping again – with a large double bed and two futon beds (perfect for smaller sleepers!).

Sustainability credentials are high, with a composting toilet and chickens for you to take your eggs from every morning. Locally-made Welsh woolen blankets and a wood-burning stone keep out the cold (and it can get cold up here, especially with the adverse spring climate at the moment!).

We’d recommend making sure you’ve got warm clothes anyway – especially as the lovely team behind Away From It All can also get you hooked up with bikes for an exploration of the surrounding Area of Outstanding National Beauty. You don’t want to miss the opportunity to explore the lakes and craggy slopes of the stunning Snowdonia National Park.

This is a lovely spot for a bit of camping without the hassle. Cooking outside over the firepit is an experience in itself – and being provided with all the necessary pots and pans make it easy to travel light. Shared washing facilities were all in good shape – and the beds and views, to die for!
