Beer in the Dominican Republic
By: Jhon Dep   |    Posted on October 6, 2012   |   0 Comments (0) (0)

The beer that has come to represent the Dominican Republic, home and abroad, more than any other is the iconic Presidente Beer. For over 70 years this beer has been the choice of the people of the Dominican Republic and a source of great pride. It is strange that a beer can elicit this much emotion, but it does. Just uttering the term “Una Fria” (a cold one) is all one needs to say to get a bottle of this beer.

Even when Dominicans move abroad, there is only one beer that they actively search out. Perhaps because it reminds them so much of home. Strangely though, the brewery that has been making this beer in the Dominican Republic for seventy-five years, Cerverceria Nacional Dominicana (CND), has its origins in the United States of America.

Prior to the arrival of the Cerverceria Nacional Dominicana in the Dominican Republic, the only beers available were imports from either North America or Europe. In wasn't until 1929 that American business person and entrepreneur, Charles H. Warzer, seized the opportunity to step into the Dominican Republic beer market. Charles H. Warzer, with a collection of business partners, secured $350,000 USD in start up money and established the Cerverceria Nacional Dominicana brewery.

Charles H. Warzer and his partners put in a lot of hard work and in no time they were seeing a return on their investments. In May of 1935, the Cerverceria Nacional Dominicana brewery released Presidente, the beer that would go on to dominate the Dominican Republic's beer market for the next 70 plus years and probably beyond. Other beer manufacturers have tried to enter the Dominican Republic's market, and while some have had success, none have come close to unseating Presidente as the top brand.

It would seem that Charles H. Warzer and his business partners knew what they were doing and had their finger on the pulse of the Dominican Republic beer consumer. It is said that the Dominican beer lovers of the past found the European beers too rich and heavy. Conversely, they found the American beers too light and with too little alcohol. Presidente was designed with all this in mind and found its success in the middle range between European and American Beer.

If you are a beer fanatic and manage to find yourself a great Dominican Republic travel deal, make sure to give Presidente a try. A great place for enjoying this storied beer is outside the Riu Palace Punta Cana on the glorious beaches of the Dominican Republic. Book today and you won't be sorry.
