Classical Studies:An Important and Worthwhile Subject to Study

In western countries classical studies is the study of language and culture of the ancient Greek and Roman societies. The history, culture and their philosophy has a great influence on the development of Western civilisation. The modern language, art, drama, philosophy, political and legal systems of the present day western societies are all derived from these two ancient civilizations. In effect we study the origins of our own culture while studying Classics.

Greek and Roman culture are fascinating subjects in their own right, and they are inter-disciplinary in nature which means that there are links to almost all other Arts subjects.Graduates in classical studies can build a career in fields as diverse as foreign affairs, university administration, trade and industry, archaeology, architecture, drama, museums, law, librarianship, and art galleries and journalism. And teaching has been the age old and a highly chosen career in this field.

Classical study is understood as the study of the civilisations of classical Greece and Rome with a deep knowledge and understanding of the classical languages, Greek and Latin. The study of any civilisation is always considered to be educationally beneficial and this is the reason that they are included in the curricula of classical studies in many schools and colleges.

These classical studies hold their place in the western education system because of the historical importance of ancient civilisation in the cultural tradition of Western Europe. These civilizations play an important part in the making of the contemporary western culture. The roots of the modern western art, science, literature, law, philosophy, politics and religion can be found in these ancient Greek and Roman cultures. For the continuing vitality and progress of cultural tradition it is important to have a thorough knowledge of its sources and development.

The ancient Greeks and Romans produced works of the intellect and creative imagination which are recognised to be of the highest quality. It is important to learn about these artistic creations to invoke an interest and love for art and culture in the next generation students. This only will ensure a smooth and rich progress of the contemporary society. Studying classical studies gives the students an opportunity to gain experience of the connections that can exist between different intellectual disciplines as classical studies is a multi-disciplinary subject such as history, literature and art, which are normally separated in other disciplinary curriculum.

The aim with which the curriculum of classical studies is designed is to provide students with a knowledge and appreciation of selected areas of Greek and Roman civilisation. Students gain experience in a variety of different types of subject-matter, evidence and argument. These courses under classical studies raise interest and stimulate students of differing abilities and academic backgrounds. It also encourages students to make comparisons between classical civilisation and contemporary western societies.

Students who study classical studies develop the skills of enquiry, interpretation and communication in artistic, literary, philosophical and historical settings. It increasestheir knowledge and understanding of some of the major trends and developments in their societies through the perspective of the history, literature, art and architecture.

The students who complete their tenures in classical studies prove to be good tools to foster an appreciation of classical studies as an important and worthwhile subject to study in the coming generation of students.
