Following in the footsteps of “An Inconvenient Truth,” “The Cove” and other documentaries that draw attention to human impact on the world's oceans, Southern Californian’s Philippe and Maxine Carillo have turned filmmakers to show the world where garbage really goes when it gets tossed in their new film, ‘Inside the Garbage of the World’." Philippe speaks to JustLuxe about the passion project and how people can help to clean up the world's oceans.

Is “Inside the Garbage of the World” your first film?

Yes it is. I did it entirely. Everything from the cinematography, interviews, Sound recording, Editing and Mixing. With a micro budget. My wife and I produced it. It was a challenge.

How would you describe the documentary?

“Inside the Garbage of the World” is a film with the mission of raising awareness and changing the situation for a better world, or just having a world in the future...

What are the biggest takeaways you want people to come away with after viewing the film?

Realizing that we are killing our Oceans and our planet. Everyone will realize that something needs to change, starting with themselves; because nobody else will do it for them. There is a state of emergency, which is not portrayed in the media. I don't know if it's already too late. But if we have a chance, it will only come by working together as a whole. And the film empower people by knowing the fact first.

You and your wife, actress/writer Maxine Carillo worked on this project together.  Is this the first project you’ve done as a team?

Yes. She was really supportive and was really sensitive to the problem. But she gave me my space of creativity to make the film the way I wanted.

How to you pick “Inside the Garbage of the World” as your first project?

I became a filmmaker by duty. It started when we saw plastic pollution on the beach we live near in Ventura. Then we did some research about where it was coming from. And then Bingo! We were now aware of the myth of the Garbage Island, and the reality of the Great Pacific Garbage patch that covers twice the size of the Continental United States. That was a wake up call. As we are living on a vintage boat, we were more sensitive to the problem, seeing trash floating everyday; so we had to do something about it. We had to spread the world. And a film was a great vehicle.

How did the title come about?

The title come from a look of the inside the garbage of the entire world. Which accumulates primarily into the 5 majors gyres. The eastern pacific garbage patch that we cover in the film is the major one but only one of them. It is located half way between Los Angeles and Hawaii. And it is growing at an exponential rate.

How long did you work on the film?

9 months full time. We felt is was an emergency. So we made it a priority.

What do you think you two learned from working on this project that you weren’t aware of at the beginning?

The scope of the disaster coming that nobody really realize. This is a worldwide plague. The fisheries are going to collapse in years to come. Fish, seabirds and Marine Mammals are dying more than ever on an exponential curve. That is not pretty. We didn't wanted to be the bearer of bad news. But if we don't stop using single use plastic, there is no future for us and our children. And it's that simple.

Where can people view the film?

It's available on YouTube for free, because we did the film for the people. You can find it on other websites as well if you do a search with the title. Here is the link: www.pcmcfilms.com

If people want to get involved, how can they help?

They can connect with us through our non-profit organization "Exodus Research Institute" (ERI) atwww.exodusresearchinstitute.orgto see how they want to help. There is of course a
