How to improve your home from the outside

When you ask someone how they could improve their house they will often automatically think about the interior, yet exterior improvements have the potential to make a big impact.

Whether it is because you are thinking of selling your home or if you simply want the property to look better for your own benefit, there are all sorts of things you can do to make the place look more attractive or impressive. Of course, everyone's idea of what looks good is slightly different, but it helps to have some inspiration for what you can do.

As well as looking in magazines, the internet and other people's homes for ideas, try the following:

Walls

A lick of paint has the potential to really transform the look of a building - sometimes you may not have realised that the original colour of the walls had faded or become discoloured, but after you have painted it you can see what a difference it makes. Even if some of the rest of the building is not in perfect condition, having a bold colour on the walls can make the place look special.

With regards to the colour you choose for the property, it is very much up to your own taste; however, bear in mind that a garish colour could put off future buyers, so don't let spontaneity rob your number one asset of some of its value.

Floor

Nothing says 'uncared for' like a property with its paving slabs overgrown with moss, damaged concrete or dirty decking. Often you can deal with these problems yourself rather than needing to call in a professional. For example, a weed killer and specialist cleaner could tidy up the paving, while concrete sealer will allow you to deal with worn concrete.

The flooring leading up to your front door is usually one of the first things that people see when they visit, so it is important to get it right if you want to make a good impression on guests.

Windows and doors

This leads neatly into another crucial area: your windows and doors. Replacing tatty old window frames or an outdated door is an ideal way to modernise your home and give it an extra sheen. It is common for people to have wooden windows or doors that simply are not weather-proof despite how aesthetically pleasing they are - as a result, they may need replacing from time to time.

Don't let this stop you from getting another wooden door or window, but just do some research into how to protect the material - there are plenty of great products on the market for this.

Garden

Where do you start with a garden? It can turn into a real mess if it is not looked after continuously and this should be factored into any plans you have for your green space. It's all well and good plotting to have an elaborate garden with a range of plants in it, but it will probably take hard work to maintain. Sometimes it is better to start simple and neat, then add features as you go.
