First of all, please introduce us to Mayssa Assaf the image consultant and the person.
I am Mayssa Assaf, mom of three amazing kids. I come from a background of mass communication, media and political science. I went on to work as image consultant, TV personality and emcee. I have also worked as fashion and beauty editor for some magazines. I slowly found people who needed me as their personal shopper and really were determined to get help. I was always grateful for this trust. Before I knew it, I was doing styling for various talented individuals and TV personalities. I do conduct individual consultations on all aspects of image enhancements, as well as communication and etiquette.
Briefly tell us how you started off in the fashion industry.
I started in the industry after getting my certification as an image consultant in New York. I was then working as a personal shopper, gaining some love from the people around me. This led me into building my social media. Slowly, I evolved from personal shopping to image consulting. I received a lot of well-known clients asking me to guide them and advise on styles that actually suited them. I continue to grow today and I could not be happier. People see what I do, they understand and appreciate.
Can you explain to our readers the difference between a personal shopper, a stylist and a look consultant?
A personal shopper helps clients chose appropriate looks based off a budget. A personal shopper understands this budget and brings what will best suit the client within the price range.
An image consultant's duties are wider than the personal shopper. There is no budget, but we research and find the best pieces for the client, bringing all factors together like background, pictures and everything related to the look. I focus on everything related to a particular look: place, timing, event, theme, pictures and all possible aspects related to the proposed look.
In your opinion why do celebrities need an image consultant?
Celebrities need an image consultant to better understand what best suits them and their actual image. It is always helpful to have expert advice, and an image consultant is the right person to help them get the right fit. It could be the right dress or fabric, and also to guide how they should carry the particular look when sitting, posing, or looking out for the camera. An image consultant is the right person to guide and advise proactively.
What is the happiest moment for a professional working in your field?
I am happy when people admire and love what I do for them! When one of my clients is really satisfied and happy with the way they look after I choose something for them, it is truly exhilarating. One of my happiest moments was when I did a workshop for ladies who were really grateful that I shared such important, but basic tips. They discussed styling and choosing the right fit for various body types. This workshop had been my vision, to speak and impart more about styling and being stylish at work, at home, with friends; a woman must look and feel her best.
What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest moment in life is when I recognize the relationship I have with people. In my work, it is so important to have the trust and love for the people who work with you. When I see my clients love my opinion and support me, it is very inspiring. Most people can be successful but not many gain respect, love and trust. This, I believe, is the most important for me.
What is a career objective you want to achieve?
I have a vision to own my own company. I would love to serve everyone who wants to get closer to their personal style.
