Kylie Jenner's Cornrows Spark Heated Debate

Amandla Stenberg with Jaden Smith

Instagram

Kylie Jenner, on Saturday, posted a selfie of herself on Instagram with cornrows. The picture not only generated over 109,000 comments and more than 1.2 million likes but also gave birth to a racially charged debate.

Amandla Stenberg, the “The Hunger Games” actress, criticized Jenner's new look as being racist. Stenberg posted, “When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter.”

Jenner replied back saying, "Mad if I do...mad if I don't. Go hang w Jaden or something." Hollywood Reporter says that rumors are rife that Stenberg is dating Jenner's ex-boyfriend, Jaden.

The representatives of both Jenner and Stenberg have not issued any statement regarding the social media exchange between the two. This has shed some doubts on whether Stenberg really made the comments on Jenner's cornrows or not.

However, Stenberg wrote another Instagram post to verbalize her strong views on the subject of Black women's femininity and beauty. She wrote that while “black features” are “beautiful,” black women are not. White women, on the other hand, are “paragons” of “desire” and “beauty.”

She said that this seemed to be the ideal in a society built upon “euro-centric” ideals of beauty. While white women receive praise for darkening their skin and plumping their lips, black women receive criticism for naturally having these features.

She also said that society at large views black women's bodies as “unattractive” and “less than human.”

Two days after posting the much talked about picture, Jenner shared another picture on Instagram. The picture had an angry looking emoji. The captions revealed that she was considering shaving some of her hair off.

Daily Mail reported that several days after her controversial post, Jenner headed to a Beverly Hills nail salon entirely ditching her cornrows. She sported a casual top knot for her pampering session.

Jenner's pal, Justin Bieber, jumped to her rescue on Instagram urging critics to “leave her alone.” He pointed out that the focus should be on the larger picture and not on criticizing a 17-year-old for wearing her hair a certain way.
