Creative Tools,

Patients can now try out their post-surgery look without going under the knife. Thanks to 3D printing, this is no longer science fiction but a reality many are already trying out.

Carrie Stern, New York City plastic surgeon is the founder of MirrorMe3D. This program takes face scans in 3D and generates print-outs. The print-outs show exactly what the face might look like post-surgery. This is also used for other body parts that are popularly augmented.

In order to explain how useful this program is, Stern said, “Patients are not good at understanding 3D simulations on a computer screen.” This new technological aid will help patients understand better what they are signing up for.

Stern also said that the idea came from noticing the usefulness of 3D photography before surgery and during consultations. She thought it would be a great idea to combine 3D photography with 3D printing to take things even further.

Thanks to this technology, patients can now make a more well-informed choice with more accurate portrait of their post-surgery look with greater accuracy.

The printouts are available in different sizes at different prices. A miniature 3D print could cost $60. A life-size print can cost around $300.

In the future, MirrorMe3D will have a portal on its website. This portal will allow patients to upload their regular 2D images. They can conduct their own simulation at home and order the desired printouts.

These printouts can be part of future consultations to keep doctor and patient on the same page. One of the biggest challenges in cosmetic surgery is to ensure that both doctor and patient understand the outcome. Unmet expectations are often a problem with patients.

3D printouts will also enable the patient to better seek the opinion of friends and family.

Cosmetic surgery can completely alter the appearance and life of a person. With this new technology, one can take a test-drive to see if their new face or body part fits well.
