Paul Edwards has been a newspaper and magazine journalist for more than 40 years. Based in Melbourne, Australia, he has travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australasia and the Pacific region and says life is too short to settle for anything less than the best. He has visited many of the world's finest hotels and resorts and recently completed a lengthy cruise on a luxurious freighter/liner around the Marquesas Islands north of Tahiti. His favourite hotels include the Ritz in London, the Splendido in Portofino, Italy and Iririki Island Resort in Vanuatu, South Pacific. He has lived in Spain, France and England and when he's not home on his small farm in the hills he likes to assess interesting luxury destinations anywhere in the world.

Also consider daylight hours - very limited in northern Europe's winter. Short answer - figure out which part of Europe you're planning to see.
