Living in La Jolla I might be a bit biased, but for me we have the best beaches! I especially like La Jolla Shores, the water stays shallow really far out, so it gets warmer than most other places down the coast.
hhhmmm. Yes, that would be a problem for me too! Although I am not sure I would condemn all Fairmonts over the one esthetician. I would try the Ritz though if you want to stay away or maybe a boutique spa that really has a lot riding on their reputation. That way you know they will go above and beyond.
It kind of depends. Most luxury hotels have great spas. I love both Fairmont and Ritz-Carlton spas myself. Just make sure they have a large space offering places to relax, saunas, steam rooms etc. Enjoy!
