Q&A with Emerging Designer, Olga Pastyrnak

Amanda Pastyrnak

Meet fashion's newest designer whose tailored silhouettes and subtle colors will always be in demand: Amanda Pastyrnak. Amanda Pastyrnak (below) explains her obsession with subtle sophisitication in her debut collection.

1). Where did your initial inspiration for the Olga Pastyrnak collection come from?

It’s so tough for me to pinpoint where my inspiration comes from, for any project. I am constantly analyzing and storing away things I see that impact me, whether a color, a painting, an outfit, an attitude, and then randomly, without warning, one of those images will come to my mind with an idea of exactly how I want to build on it.

For my company, I would say in my early teens I began to realize that there was a unity among the things I saw that inspired me - there was beauty, sophistication, depth, subtlety, simplicity, grandeur. I began to want to infuse those things into everything I could - the way I spoke, behaved, dressed, the things I created. Very soon, the idea for Olga Pastyrnak was formed. I had always loved to sketch clothes, and knew that a women’s way of dressing said so much about her, so it was obvious to use clothing as the outlet to create things that embodied all the attributes I love.

2). What are some of the challenges you've encountered launching the collection?

Well, I’ve launched this collection entirely on my own. I thought that working by myself on the development would ensure that my ideas could be executed however I saw best. But I have realized how challenging it is to endeavor such an undertaking without any additional input.

In any entrepreneurial venture, I now realize how crucial it is to have a board of colleagues or mentors to bounce ideas off of. And whether that means that they validate my ideas or challenge them, and whether I heed them or not, it is invaluable to at least be aware of other points of view when building a strong business foundation.

3). What are your favorite pieces in the collection?

That’s not a fair question! But alright, I have grown to really love the Elynora dress. She has an almost magical quality that allows her to alter the posture and persona of every woman I have seen wear her. She is made of dense, stretch blends that allow her to tighten and accentuate a woman’s curves. Everything about her is flattering, from the narrow cut of the neck, the racer back, the elongated length and high slit, and the invisible zipper that runs the length of the front. I have to tell you, every woman who puts this on, myself included, stands immediately taller, and projects the image that she owns the room. It’s confidence in a dress.

4). How do you define your personal style?

I am very simple. I live in jeans and ribbed tanked tops. For evening, I may add a blazer to the ensemble. I do dress up every once in a while -- a special guy, a special event -- but when I do, I can’t ever feel too polished.

Dressing to perfection doesn’t suit my personality, so if I am too done up, I don’t feel like myself. That’s why in this collection I’ve included pieces that can be worn to look very polished, but that also have subtle details that hint at the casual: a racerback, a loose, slinky fit, cheeky seaming. I love the collection because each piece has elements that can be dressed up or down. And the best part is that if you’re wearing a piece casually, you still have an air of polish, and if you’re wearing a piece formally, it comes off as being low-key.

5). Tell us about your design process.  How long does it take? Do you prefer sketching or constructing them?

I’m not a great artist, but I do love to sketch. Sketching is the part of the process that can be revised and edited as many times as I want, simply with an eraser. Once in the construction phase, it becomes a greater ordeal and a greater investment, to move a seam half an inch, or change the color. I usually need to sit with a design for a couple of weeks, and revisit it frequently for revisions, before I am content with the final product.

6). What else do you have in the pipeline for 2015?

Since Spring Summer is ready to ship, I am looking forward to getting a head start with Fall Winter. As a designer, one puts so much of oneself into the process of creating a collection, which in fashion can last a very long time, that at a certain point, ones needs to detach and move on to the next project. I am at that point now, and eager to start building something new.
