Relaxing on Jersey

St Helier Waterfront, Jersey

Jersey offers the strange combination of continental Europe in a very British fashion. Being only 14 miles from the French coast there is a definite European feel to Jersey, from its French street names to its al fresco cafés and bars.

Food Festival

The food has a definite continental taste to it and with fresh fish a plenty on the island it’s not surprising that seafood dishes are amongst the best on offer.

The Jersey Food Festival is an annual celebration of gastonomic delights prepared and served on the island. The Festival has a wonderful strapline "Food that is grown here, not flown here"

Art

There is also a lively art scene on the island and the capital, St Helier has a vibrant small gallery circuit, with many of the café bars also providing exhibition space to local artists. The centre of the cultural set is the Jersey Art Centre where you see the best talents on the island highlighted during the regular changing program of events.

Jersey Culture

The Jersey Museum & Gallery is another destination for discovering the islands fascinating history. From its Neolithic beginnings to the present day, the exhibits tell the tale of how Jersey came into being. The gallery houses one of the finest collections of the works of Claude Cahun, he is credited with being one of the Surrealists leading lights.

Castles

One of Jersey’s outstanding sights is the defences of Mont Orgueil Castle, which for over 600 years has been guarding the coastline and watching out for French invaders. The castle is a marvellous place to explore and is a labyrinth of passages and staircases, each visit opens up new routes as you delve into its secrets. Deep in the dungeon you will find the witchcraft museum, while there is also a visitors centre providing an illustrated history of the castle.

Occupation

Jersey’s more recent tragic history is also on display in the Jersey War Tunnel attraction. Here the excavated chambers of the occupying German forces have been turned into an interesting museum that depicts life under the brutal regime and its effect on the citizens. The centre also acts as a memorial to the thousands of slave labourers who were brought over from mainland Europe to construct the largest of the tunnels, many of who died on the island.

Jersey wildlife

The Gerald Durrell Wildlife Park is an excellent attraction, featuring sympathetic environments where animals are cared for with great attention to their natural way of life. The park has a world-renowned breeding and conservation program and goes to long lengths to ensure the animals welfare.

The whole island is a paradise for nature lovers with peaceful walks in the countryside or across the beaches, there are miles of country lanes down which you can cycle or wonderful opportunities if you like playing about in water.

Accommodation

As a popular holiday destination the island has many hotels and guest houses. In recent years the Tourism Office has been keen to promote the island as an ideal short break destination for high income couples and the "pink pound". As a result new luxury and boutique hotels have opened to attract these affluent visitors.

The waterfront luxury of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Jersey offers comfort and delightful views of St Helier’s marina and St Aubin’s Bay. You are also sufficiently close to the town centre to enjoy the attractions, pubs and restaurants.

The hotel has 195 exquisite rooms, a scrumptious in-house restaurant and a fresh, modern design. Experience four-star opulence in one of the three different themed rooms.
