Surprise! There is Artistic Stuff Happening in Paris!

Okay, you are just not going to believe it when you hear this, but various places in Paris, France, have intriguing and provocative arts and culture displays and events going on. AFP - The male nude took centre stage in Paris on Tuesday as a controversial exhibition celebrating the masculine form went on show at the celebrated Musee d'Orsay.

Juxtaposing traditional painting and sculptures with contemporary homoerotic photography, a museum better known for its impressionist masterpieces has brought together more than 200 pieces in a collection designed to stimulate and amuse in equal measure.

"It is an exhibition that doesn't take itself too seriously," Guy Cogeval, the museum's president and one of the curators of the exhibition, told AFP. Read More

 

Take one look at the sheer chiffon and glittering bodices streaking down the catwalk in Paris this week and you’ll realise preconceptions of the city being po-faced are misplaced. Away from the shiny department stores and the touristy emporia on the Champs-Elysées, Paris is home to winding streets full of quirky boutiques. Head to the area around Rue des Francs-Bourgeois and Rue des Rosiers in the Marais District for vintage clothing at Free’P’Star (don’t let the chaos put you off – there are some great finds to be had); French clothes at Cotélac and Comptoir des Cotonniers, and gorgeous vials of perfume at Annick Goutal. PARIS — There was a time when Paris was an obligatory way station for aspiring foreign writers on the Grand Tour through Europe as they strove to burnish their reputations as cosmopolitan sophisticates, but in recent years the city has seemed to have lost its edge.

Now Paris is reaching out to recapture its place as a center of literature with a new festival of international writers that was set to begin Friday.

“There’s a sense in America that France is a country of culture, but when you are looking from the inside, a lot of people have been complaining that France needs to find its beating heart again,” said Lila Azam Zanganeh, a French-Iranian writer who now lives in New York and is one of the writers participating in the festival, Écrivains du Monde.
