Tales from the Red Carpet: “A Short History of the Cocktail Ring”
The trend for the cocktail ring began a few years ago, when fashion trends reached back into the 1940s/1950s for inspiration. The “Cocktail Hour” was invented in the 1950s to embrace the exuberance of the post-war era. Wives dressed up in their cocktail ensembles and waited in their well-appointed homes for their husbands to arrive after work. In the 1960s, and 1970s, the “cocktail ring” simply lost its meaning, with women’s emancipation, just like many things from that period. Trends in fashion are always associated with the cultural experiences of a society and the cocktail ring, having been re-discovered has returned as something completely new. The “statement ring” is the new trend or if you wish to call them “cocktail rings” you’re allowed. Carrie Bradshaw made the “Cosmo” a worldwide phenomenom on “Sex in the City”. The show had a series of fashion firsts and the Cocktail Ring joined the Manolo Blahnik shoe as one of the most coveted items. Now, women can reward themselves for a job well done or simply show their fashion forward sensibilities with this unique piece of jewelry that tells the world you have arrived.
I recently discovered a company that has built its business almost entirely on the cocktail ring, “GLITTERRINGS”. When I saw their selection of rings at an Academy Awards event with their “low-luxe” prices I was in. A collection that caught my eye was the Jill Zarin Collection, but this is just the beginning. As a featured designer at GLITTERRINGS she is bringing to the collections a signature style that is uniquely hers. Sure, not all of us can be on that red carpet, but for special occaisions, you’ve got to have something to “mix it up” with your own jewelry collections at home. The rings appeal to both the ladies who want to “replace” their good jewelry while traveling or statement rings to complete an outfit. I picked out a beautiful green stoned ring that appealed to me, and wore this ring to an Academy Awards party along with my fine jewelry, a golden cuff and chandelier earrings and guess what piece attracted the most attention? Co-founders Joyce Tsao and Karen Webster have been designing accessories for many years so when they focused on the cocktail ring, as an “expression of style” for women everywhere it was a win-win. This is one fashion trend that gives every woman a chance to express herself at a price that you can afford. With all the talk of glamour on the red carpet, I'm a firm believer that a little glamour in everyone's life is 'just a cocktail ring away'. No matter what your outfit is, from jeans to an evening short, the 'statement ring' creates a signature look that works with just about anything in your wardrobe.
