The (Near) Future of Video Games

Since video game companies made the transition from cartridges to optical drives, it has become a major concern for gamers to keep their precious video games in pristine condition as scratches and smudges can keep a game from ever being played again.

Recognizing this problem, video game companies have begun releasing games digitally, allowing users to access their video games without having requiring a physical copy. However, this digital market only applies to older or smaller games; new triple-A releases still have to be purchased from a retailer.

The next logical step in releasing games digitally is to make the need to visit a retailer (or purchasing from a website) obsolete through allowing consumers to make purchases of big-name games like the record-shattering Call of Duty series available for digital download the instant they get released. Microsoft has already verified that their next xBox system will allow this and it can be safely assumed that the next Sony Playstation will do the same.

For many, this is the most exciting technology to be in development at this time.
