I went on an awesome local retreat to The Hotel Wilshire in Los Angeles. I took advantage of their 2-night “Weekend Getaway Package” (sometimes the perfect getaway can be found right in your backyard)! The hotel celebrated their 1 year anniversary last month (they opened September, 2011). They are located at Wilshire and Crescent Heights Blvd; a great spot for accommodations because you are central to downtown LA, Beverly Hills, Hollywood and West Hollywood; within a 5-10 minute drive to each city.
This is a true boutique hotel, as although it is on the main thoroughfare of Wilshire, it is almost tucked away and easy to miss. However, the privacy and exclusivity of the property is a good reason why many people enjoy visiting the hotel and rooftop restaurant. The Weekend Getaway Package included a welcome bottle of champagne, free valet parking, late checkout at 2pm, complimentary internet, and access to the rooftop restaurant and pool.
The Hotel Wilshire contains 55 Guestrooms and 19 Suites, including a rooftop penthouse suite. One of the main attractions to the property is their rooftop restaurant, The Roof on Wilshire, which offers panoramic views of the Los Angeles skyline and Hollywood Hills. The pool is located in the middle of the venue, and is available for lounging during the day. The expansive menu is prepared by celebrity chef, Eric Greenspan, who describes the selection as "Vibrant American, with innovative and creative twists on classic comfort foods”.
I had dinner at the restaurant on a Saturday night, and arrived around 6pm. This was the perfect time to catch the sunset and experience the city transition from light to dusk. The restaurant was near capacity at this time, and they attracted many upscale patrons. From the menu, I chose an appetizer of fried calamari, a main dish of Mahi Mahi with a side of kale. All were savory and prepared with maximum flavor. My favorite cocktail was The Mulberry, a blend of raspberry vodka, berries, lime, topped with sparkling wine. The Dark & Stormy mule was a great choice as well. Of course, the best part of the evening was the awe-inspiring view of the city.
Since I am a pro-football fan, I found most convenient the new sports bar located next door to the hotel (The Varsity LA Sports Bar & Lounge). It was nice to be able to walk a few steps, catch a game, and return to the comfort of the hotel. Also located close to the hotel are The Grove shopping center,Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Peterson Automotive Museum, La Brea Tar Pits, The El Rey Theater, Craft + Folk Art Museum and Architecture and Design Museum.
The Hotel Wilshire is a first-rate retreat for enjoying good food, lounging by the pool, and experiencing the many attractions surrounding the property.
