Staying Safe When Travelling Abroad
By: vedprakash   |    Posted on March 5, 2013   |   0 Comments (1) (0)

When you are travelling outside of your own country, then there is a chance that you may feel less safe than when you are in your own country. You may be concerned about getting lost, coming across undesirable people or getting into trouble for your behavior. There are things that you can do in order to protect yourself.

Carry Useful Resources

It is wise to have a map of the area so that you do not get lost. Whether you are walking or driving, you will remain safer if you know where you are. It can be useful having a GPS system but this can break down and a map never can, so always have one as a back up. Also carry a mobile phone so that you can call for help if you need it and also carry useful numbers such as local police, ambulance, car hire company and insurance company just in case. Have money with you too in cash as well as credit card form, in case you need to buy things to help you. Always have a torch with you after dark, just in case there are no street lamps and you need to see. Carry a first aid kit with you containing basic items and also any medication that you need to take for conditions that you have.

Learn the laws of the Land

It is important to make sure you are aware of local laws. This is important for everyone and in every country as there may be things that you are not aware of. If you are driving while abroad then be aware of speed limits and other traffic laws as these may be different to what you expect. Knowing them will not only make you a safer driver and help you to avoid possible arrest, but will enable you to better predict what other drivers are doing.

Be Careful of Where you go and When

It is good to read up about the place before you visit. Check out whether there are some areas that are less safe than others. Make sure that you avoid completely unsafe areas and perhaps only visit some places in the daytime when it is light. If you are unsure then ask your tour operator or local people about it first as they will know more than you.

Have the Right Insurance

It can help you to feel safer if you have insurance. This means that if you lose anything, have items stolen or need to get medical help, the costs are all covered. This can reassure you and help you to feel safer even if you feel there is very little chance that you will have to use them.
