Mother Nature is majestic and powerful, and nowhere is that more apparent than the ocean; swift currents and strong waves pose a danger even to modern ships.  The sea’s watery depths largely remain a mystery to us, as it gets exponentially more difficult to explore the deeper you go.

Perhaps that’s what makes surfing such an exhilarating experience: the conquering of the ocean through sport and individual skill.  Surfing definitely involves danger: crushing waves, rocky coastlines, and the ever present threat of drowning.  Besting waves is a badge of honor, you’ll often hear surfers bragging about the biggest, craziest waves they’ve ever surfed.  For those of us without the insane skills necessary to tackle massive waves, surfing is just part of the fun to be experienced at the beach.  Read on for a list of great places to surf that also double as amazing vacation destinations.

Panama City Beach

An annual favorite for Spring Break vacations, Panama City Beach in Florida is the perfect vacation destination that also includes great surfing.  You’ll want to head to St. Andrew’s State Park for surfing; St. Andrews has plenty of rock jetties, and you can expect great waves at this site.  Of course, being a prime Spring Break destination means Panama City Beach has everything you could want for the perfect getaway: restaurants, shopping, luxury rentals and more.

Oahu, Hawaii

Frequently acknowledged as the surfing capital of the United States, the Pipeline break hosts some of the best swells in the world.  You’ll want to brush up on your skills though; these waves aren’t beginner friendly.  When you’re done catching waves, the beauty of Hawaii is yours to explore.  Make the trip down to the south side of Oahu, and you can visit the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial and pay tribute to WWII heroes.

Encinitas, California

Take a trip to this Southern California town, home to the La Paloma Theatre.  You’ll feel right at home in this comfortable, friendly town.  Head down to Moonlight Beach, where beginners are encouraged to practice near the middle sandbars, or rub shoulders with the more seasoned riders to the north and south.  When you’re done hitting the surf, head on down to nearby San Diego for some bonus sightseeing!

San Sebastian, Spain

Heading out of the United States, San Sebastian, Spain is your romantic destination surfing getaway.  Sometimes referred to as the cultural capital of Spain’s Basque country, you’ll have countless sights to take in and delicious foods to sample.  If you can break away from the delights of the city, head out to Bahia de la Concha to experience one of the most breathtaking bays in the world, then hit the waves of Zurriola Beach.

Nosara, Costa Rica

Another amazing location outside the U.S., a visit to Costa Rica will top your list of life experiences.  Playa Guiones is the beginner friendly beach here, highlighted by waves that break well offshore and then roll all the way to the sands; new surfers will be able to take lessons here in a comfortable, safe environment.  Away from the beaches, you will want to take advantage of Costa Rica’s focus on ecotourism.  With rainforest tours and river rafting excursions, the beauty of Costa Rica is yours to explore.
