 Mount Gay Rum Sets Sails High Luxury Spirits: The Luxury Institute recently ranked Mount Gay Rum number one in rums in a 2007 luxury-brands-status-index survey. MGR beat out four other prominent rum distillers to receive this accolade. The Luxury Institute is an independent market research company that studies trends and developments regarding the top 10 percent of America's wealthy. The company's roots date back to 1703. So how could we not bang the drum for the oldest rum in the world? However, not one to rest on its laurels, the rum maker remains in tune to sating the palates of today's rum connoisseurs.
Mount Gay Rum is bottled in five distinct flavors: Eclipse, Vanilla, Mango, Sugar Cane Brandy, and Extra Old. Eclipse is of a lighter body and not as intense as double-distilled rum. Vanilla is close to colorless and treats the palate with hints of vanilla and caramel. It is both bitter and sweet with neither being overwhelming. Mango is sweet and tangy to the taste buds and colorless to the eye, while Sugar Cane Brandy is smooth and smoky and has a luminiferous quality. Extra Old is very smooth and light-bodied with an aroma gets sweeter the longer it is sniffed.
