Angel's Share: Mouton Rothschild 2000

Luxury Wines: The Mouton Rothschild 2000 Jeroboam Collector's Numbered Edition is one of today's best wine values. It is not only delightful to the palate, but it also is a work of art to behold. Since 1945, the Château Mouton Rothschild has used an original work by a famous painter for its label. However, for the 2000 vintage, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild wanted to ring in the new millennium with a distinct twist. The baroness fancied the entire bottle being a work of art.

Retaining the same high quality of art as previously rendered on labels by great artists such as Jean Cocteau, Leonor Fini, Henry Moore, Marie Laurencin, Georges Braque, Salvador Dalí, Jacques Villon, Pierre Alechinsky, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, César, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Andy Warhol, and more presented a challenge. A review of the works at the Museum of Wine in Art at Mouton Rothschild brought the Augsburg Ram, a chased silver-gilt drinking vessel created around 1590 by goldsmith Jakob Schenauer, into focus. As the Augsburg Ram also had previously been used as a Mouton emblem, it was an excellent fit. A new technique in glassmaking had to be developed by glassmakers B.S.N. to successfully place the image of the Augsburg Ram on the jeroboams.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild released a limited, numbered series of five-liter jeroboams. Each of the 5,000 bottles is delivered in a rare African wood case with a sturdy gold clasp. While the artwork of the vintage 2000 is an obvious masterpiece, many wine pundits have ranked the bottle's contents among the top wines of the vintage as well.

Generally wines like this increase in value by as much as 20 percent annually. On the night of its debut, October 22, 2002, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, six jeroboams were hand signed by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and then auctioned off by Sotheby's for charity. Preceding the auction, Sotheby's Wine Department conservatively valued those at $10,000 each.

The Mouton Rothschild 2000 Jeroboam Collector's Numbered Edition is available from Angel's Share at $4,875 per bottle. Two or more bottles may be purchased at $4,500 each. Angel's Share also can provide long-term storage solutions for buyers.
