Tezón Tequila: Beyond Convention

Food & Spirits: Premium tequila should be as soft as velvet as it passes the lips, as smooth as silk as it is swallowed, and as sensual as a hot summer's night south of the equator. Akin to the art of making fine scotch and fine wine, the process of making premium tequila requires a precise execution and thorough aging process. Unlike many tequilas, Tezón produces tequila the old-fashioned way through a process known as Tahona. The Tahona process involves hand-selecting and harvesting agave; crushing and separating the pulp from the juice in a traditional grinding wheel made from volcanic tezontle; and undergoing two distillations in smaller copper pot stills. The combined cool climate and red, mineral-rich volcanic soil of Jalisco, Mexico make for an ideal environment for harvesting the plant.

Like all of Tezón tequila, Tezón Anejo adheres to a method of aging, which involves slowly roasting only the best 8-to 12 year-old estate grown blue agave plants in a traditional brick oven for at least three full days. The extra time and care prove to be the key ingredient that others lack- a smooth yet complex tequila ideal for sipping, savoring, and arousing the senses.

While many barflies tend to lean toward the tried and true, so called "big-name" labels of tequila (generally aged for just 36 hours), Tezón exceeds expectations and sets a new industry standard. The Tezón label features a Blanco, Reposado and Anejo, which all offer a refinement like no other. The approachability and ease of the premium hand-harvested spirit is sure to make the entire Tezón family a household name faster than you can say "Patron."

And while the bottle itself may not be as important as what is inside, the superb craftsmanship of the casing creates a delicate blend of quality and aesthetic. The bottle's side is adorned with four metal plates that represent the four elements of the production process: agave, fire, Tahona and spirit. Even the company's Web site moves beyond convention with its interactive features such as recipes, videos, edgy quizzes and external links ranging from masculine rituals to pampered pooches.
