Herradura: Not your Average Tequila

Food & Spirits: Some tequila connoisseurs know Herradura and it just may have been one of the best-kept secrets until now. With the help of high-end distilleries like Herradura, tequila is moving toward a more sophisticated, high-end spirit that people sip and enjoy.

Serious tequila aficionados have known about Herradura but now tequila drinkers everywhere are getting hip to the Herradura difference. Tequila Herradura undergoes an elaborate process of production, similar to that of cognac. It begins with the careful cultivation of the agave plant, which has around a 10-year maturation period. Selection and harvesting follows and the "pinas" or "hearts" are slowly cooked in clay ovens. Natural fermentation and double distillation of the extracted juice precede the transfer of the tequila to oak barrels, where it ages for varying lengths of time in cellars.

The wood imparts its natural color to the tequila, and no artificial coloring is needed. The finished product is then bottled results in a rich, unique taste that reflects the care taken in each step of the process.

Tequila Herradura is a revered and storied premium tequila and it shows in the ultra-smooth, premium taste. Sipped like a fine cognac or brandy, Herradura Añejo is aged for two years in oak barrels.

Created in 1963, Herradura Añejo is made from 100% Tequilana Weber Blue Agaves. With a strength of 40 and an aging process of 25 months, this tequila comes from the blue agave plant. Tequila Herradura grows its own agave, which is rare amongst tequila distillers. And they tend to it with expert hands (the agave takes up to 7 years to mature.)

Tequila Herradura Anejo offers a smooth taste, achieved by the long rest in white oak barrels. Its crystal appearance reveals the purity of the process. Bright, clear amber color with golden tints, the tequila has great body, luxury notes of boiled agave, raw agave, cinammon and fruity notes. The flavor also has a hint of vanilla, caramel, and coffee.

As a result, the well-balanced tequila is a mixture of wooden accents, along with an extremely sweet agave presence. Herradura Añejo has been compared to some of the best whiskies in the world.

The delicately smooth and refined spirit is a collection of fruity accents and a blend of wooden hints. The agave is prominent in the finish and the texture on the palate is quite complex. The many different flavors complement each other and blend harmoniously. Tequila Herradura Anejo is quite palateable, warm and smooth.
