Fine Wines: The Stags Leap District Winegrowers Association (SLDWA) recently celebrated the 12th annual release of its limited edition Appellation Collection. The Appellation Collection is the only case offering in the U.S. comprised entirely of cabernet sauvignon, a compilation represented by one bottle each from the SLDWA's member wineries.
This is the first year each wine is the same vintage and varietal, a goal the Association has been aiming toward for years. For the wine lover, the Collection provides a unique opportunity to taste across the renowned District, one of Napa Valley's smallest sub-appellations. It is a perfect wine cellar addition or holiday gift. Since its debut in 1997, the highly sought after Collection has evolved from a mixed case of estate wines to a complete luxurious offering of cabernet sauvignon.
The 2004 Appellation Collection includes one Cabernet Sauvignon from each of the following Stags Leap District Winegrowers' member wineries: Baldacci Family Vineyards, Chimney Rock Winery, Cliff Lede Vineyards, Clos Du Val, Hartwell Vineyards, Ilsley Vineyards, Malk Family Vineyards (labeled Griffin Vineyards), Pine Ridge Winery, Regusci Winery, Shafer Vineyards, Silverado Vineyards, Robert Sinskey Vineyards, Stags' Leap Winery, Steltzner Vineyards and Taylor Family Vineyards.
"2004 was a terrific vintage in the Stags Leap District. Sufficient rainfall in the winter, a beautifully warm spring, unusually early budbreak, and plenty of heat throughout the summer, set the District for an intense cabernet crop of small berries and small clusters and an early harvest," says Kevin Morrisey, winemaker at the Stags' Leap Winery. "The wines show true varietal and vintage character. The 2004 vintage will cellar for decades."
