Fashion House Diesel Produces Fine Wines

Fine Wines: Diesel Farm is dedicated to the art of wine making, making sure that that the product is as a luxuriously good tasting as the bottles that they are made in.

Diesel Farm's founder and president Renzo Rosso is the same man behind Diesel jeans, the luxury denim company.

Rosso saved a 2,500-acre farm in Marostica, Italy from merely producing quantity and changed it around to produce quality. As a result, only a few thousand bottles of each wine is produced, making it a favorite of wine lovers, connoisseurs and collectors alike.

Although Rosso owns around 42 companies, he has roots in winemaking; growing up on a farm, he has memories of his own parents making wine.

He says, "I was born on a farm. It gave me an education - today this is kind of a luxury education. The new generation, they don't know how to enjoy the taste of this homemade salami. I consider this a privilege. I try to pass it on to my children and the people close to me."

The now organic farm has benefited from the aid of Roberto Cipresso, a consultant who served as the vintner to the pope at one time. But Rosso still retained some of the farm's origins including Mr. Gualtiero, who has run the farm for 20 years and can often be found in the kitchen, cooking up the farm's offerings.

The vineyard now produces Bianco di Rosso, made from chardonnay grapes; Rossi di Rosso, made from cabernet and merlot grapes; and Nero di Rosso, made from pinot noir grapes as well as the newer additions of Olio di Rosso and Grappa di Rosso, based on the regional specialty of grappa, which utilizes a combination of different grapes.

The wine is made through traditional processes, without filtering, ensuring bold colors.

Because the yields are limited, each classic Maderia-style bottle is hand numbered, with the name stamped directly on the glass. The boutique wines can be found at such illustrious restaurants as Babbo in New York and the River Cafe in London.

Like the designer jeans Diesel is known for; each luxurious bottle costs more than $200.
