Nothing Grey About It

Food & Spirits: One has to look far and wide for a steakhouse that's not another chain, just not another cog in a vast restaurant group. It's not that I can't enjoy chain-eating, it's just that there's usually a deep character and story behind one-shop only steakhouses. The latest I've uncovered is housed in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter: Greystone. Greystone has an intriguing yet engaging atmosphere that features a stunning staircase, giant fireplace, and a private wine room many would die for. I soon found out during my visit that several decades ago, the building used to be a movie theater. The grey stones lining the once operating elevator still remain and were the inspiration for the restaurant's name.

Greystone is celebrating its 10th birthday this year, a notable accomplishment in the rapidly evolving Gaslamp area, and the restaurant has introduced a completely new menu. Of course there's an array of New York Sirloin and filet mignons, but the Buffalo Tenderloin and Kobe Short Ribs, pan roasted for eight hours, stand out on the new menu. I couldn't resist the wild boar pappadelle, a wonderfully rich pasta, and the Maple glazed pork belly tacos, served with a pear compote.

So Happy Birthday, Greystone. I know I won't be the only one waiting for the next decade's culinary celebration.
