Open That Bottle Night 2006 (OTBN) You've been saving a bottle of wine for that one perfect night. You know the one...the expensive California cabernet from a famous vineyard, or the fancy Bordeaux you got as a wedding gift 15 years ago, or the elegant white Burgundy that has aged to perfection, yet...the bottle (or bottles) sit in your cellar waiting for the "special occasion" to occur.
We cherish these vintage or expensive bottles of wine, think of them often, yet save them for some unnamed future event, never to be shared. If wine is meant to be consumed, appreciated and shared, then why do we wait? This is the question asked by Wall Street Journal wine writers Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher, and so they created "Open That Bottle Night" (OTBN) six years ago, on the last Saturday of February, to encourage us to quit waiting and let the wine become the event.
Gaiter and Brecher invite wine lovers to celebrate the incredible memories and sensory reflections associated with wine and drink the bottle that beckons. OTBN challenges wine lovers to go into the cellar on February 25th, choose a special bottle, and make a memory happen. It can be old or new, expensive or not and whether it is a night of romance for two, or dinner for 10 - just do it! You can even choose to share your story with them at wine@wsj.com and perhaps your OTBN will make it into their column.
Thousands of wine enthusiasts will be opening a bottle this Saturday. I wonder what wine I will choose and what memory will accompany? Of course, once that bottle is finished, consider shopping for a replacement wine for the next OTBN, and save a bundle on all your fine wines online at www.personalcellar.com-
