Harris Teeter - A Staple of Southern Luxury Edges North

Luxury Services: Is it possible that grocery shopping could be enjoyable? North Carolina-based Harris Teeter has provided its customers with an elegant experience for years. Currently operating 151 upscale groceries in Virginia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida, Harris Teeter is about to invade the North. Ground was recently broken on what will be the chain's northernmost store, located in the beach resort community of Bayside, Delaware. The 52,000-square-foot market is slated to open in late 2007.

It's a far cry from the first store, opened by W.T. Harris in 1936. Harris borrowed $1,500 to open a store that boasted air-conditioning and a 9 p.m. closing time on Fridays. The chain continues to lead the way in luxury-grocery trends today. Modern Harris Teeter customers can select from an average of 1,800 varieties of wines in each store, with wine stewards available to personally assist customers with selections and special orders, and regularly scheduled wine-tastings.

Regular groceries have a fish department; Harris Teeter has a Fishermans Market, with weekly Fresh Catch specials flown in from every end of the globe, as well as the freshest, highest-quality American seafood. Whether a recipe calls for Arctic Char from Iceland or catfish from the Carolinas, Harris Teeter can provide it. The Farmers Market offers 600 fresh produce items daily, with Green Thumb Experts available to answer customers' questions and provide recipe ideas.

Harris Teeter's commitment to quality and stellar customer service doesn't stop in its physical stores. With Express Lane, busy customers can select items online and pick up their order when they want. Express Lane orders are individually prepared by personal shoppers who adhere to customer requests; according to the website, if a customer likes their bananas a little green, their personal shopper will ensure they get green bananas.

Order groceries, browse recipes, learn about nutrition, or locate the nearest Harris Teeter by visiting the company's website.
