Wine Review
An old fashioned horse town gives its nod of approval to the future Santa Barbara wine country. It's hard to believe now, but even up until a decade ago, there were very few vineyards in Santa Barbara County producing world-class wines. It is not because the area wasn't suited to growing grapes, but rather because the area was originally settled and developed by horse ranchers. As it turns out, those horse ranchers were sitting on a vinous gold mine! Rolling hills, plenty of Southern California sunshine and cool ocean breezes create the perfect "trifecta" for living the good life, raising horses and growing grapes.
The tiny Royal Oaks Winery, which produces less then 5000 cases per year, is located just between the two small old fashioned towns of Santa Ynez and Los Olivos. The White Hawk Vineyard in, is a tiny vineyard just north-east of downtown Santa Barbara. Nested between horse ranches, the vineyard has been a closely guarded trade secret for many years. White Hawk vineyard has always been well known among the locals for producing outstanding Chardonnay fruit, and soon the rest of the world will know too! The wine displays aromas of white flowers with tropical nuances of mango, papaya and peach. On the palate the wine is rich with ripe fruit of Golden Delicious apples and Honeydew melon. It has a silky texture with a smooth vanilla finish of toasted oak.
Try pairing this wine with a pasta dish with a light butter sauce, roasted Cornish game hens or whole roasted Maine lobster. |
