Fashion and Accessories: Although Derek Lam tends to stay away from the so-called "trends," you can expect to see his new line of handbags slung around the arm of young and old alike.
The buzz over the up-and-coming designer has created huge expectations and anticipation.
After graduating from New York's esteemed Parson's School of Design, Lam began his career as an assistant to Michael Kors. In 2005, the apprentice ventured out and created his own line of clothing. After his ready-to-wear became an instant success, he added jewelry and shoes to his growing list of achievements. Now, with the support and recognition from the fashion world, Lam presents his new line of handbags.
Whether you're uptown or downtown, his handbags are both elegant and subtle in design and ideal for every occasion. His use of neutral shades, such as saddle, cream, sage, and mushroom will complement any ensemble. It seems that the new must-have "It bag" this season is the "Hildegard" leather hobo. The bag features soft-grained leather, aged brass hardware, and a ram's head adorned to the pin-tucked gathers on the front. Could a ram's head be his new signature? I like it.
Not only is this bag easy on the eyes, it's also durable enough to withstand everyday use while maintaining its appearance. It has an attachable leather shoulder strap and also a flat leather handle with a 6-inch drop. It does have an open top, but is redeemed by the interior grained leather coin pouch with kiss-lock closure and the leather-trimmed patch pocket and cell phone pocket. Also, for added storage capacity there is an expandable base zipper.
To own your very own hobo will run you $1800. You can purchase this or any other of Lam's fabulous handbags at upscale retailers like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, or online at eLuxury. Sure, some people say that's too much money to spend on a bag, but c'mon, you're paying for the quality. This bag could last you a lifetime. Well, at least until you find the next "It Bag."
Recently, Lam was appointed Creative Director for Tod's, a thriving Milan-based label. His first collection will hit the shelves in July 2007 and will be for the autumn/winter 2007/2008 season.
