 Fashion Designer Profiles: Bill Blass Fashion Bios: William Ralph Blass established his eponymous Bill Blass fashion house in 1970. Over the course of his career, Blass has established himself as one of the most internationally recognized American designers of his time. He was a true innovator and fashion legend who left an indelible mark on the world of fashion.
Born in Indiana to a dressmaker and traveling hardware salesman in 1922, Blass discovered his passion for the arts at a very early age. In 1939 he left his hometown of Fort Wayne to exercise his creative abilities at Parsons School of Design in New York City. After graduation Blass was drafted to serve in the army during WWII. When the war ended he knew that in order to immerse himself into the heart of fashion, he needed to permanently move to New York where he could pursue the fashionable life he so desired. Blass soon became known for having the most beautiful and impeccable tailoring in America. He created a sporty, yet sophisticated aesthetic by combining clean, architectural elements with high-class glamour silhouettes.
One cannot mention Bill Blass without mentioning his "ladies." Blass' iconic aesthetic as well as his notorious charm and charisma helped him cultivate a loyal following of influential women who became longtime fans of his work, including first ladies Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, and Jackie Kennedy, as well as Candice Bergen and Brooke Astor.
In his lifetime, Blass was the recipient of several prestigious, professional accolades, including the Fashion Institute of Technology's Lifetime Achievement Award and seven Coty Awards. Although Blass passed away in 2002, his impressive legacy carries on through his internationally renowned design house, which continues to grow under the leadership of Peter Sorn and Michael Bastian. Bill Blass remains a name synonymous with Timeless Style and Modern American Design.
