Fashion & Style: While many luxury labels are experiencing a downturn at the moment, luxe French sport line Moncler, maker of the worlds most coveted down jackets, is one very stylish exception. The company, founded in 1952, recently opened a boutique in Aspen and just opened a brand new shop in Gstaad, bringing its total number of stores worldwide to twelve. The Gstaad boutique features a luxurious alpine chalet theme with bluestone floors, pinewood ceilings and walls featuring horizontal wooden slats evoking downhill skiers in motion.
The boutique offers Moncler men's and women's lines, along with an assortment of men's and women's accessories including shoes, hats, gloves, scarves and bags. Moncler, now based in Milan and backed by the Carlyle Group, has collaborated with the likes of Balenciaga, Yohji Yamamoto and Fendi. It's high-end Gamme Rouge line, with jackets retailing for thousands of dollars, is designed by Italian fashionista Giambattista Valli.
Moncler is credited with inventing the down-filled ski jacket, which it has supplied to French Olympic teams for the winter games since the 1960s, though these days theyre more likely to be spotted on the likes of fans such as Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Victoria Beckham and Kanye West.
