Though designers are forced to show resort collections only 10 weeks after presenting those for fall, Som manages to get the job done tastefully. Not only was he able to pull his newest line off without mimicking typical resort styles, but the San Francisco native was able to do it in a way that showed authenticity, producing fresh pieces that stay true to his classically preppy look and reflect his many achievements in the fashion world.
After growing up in San Francisco, Som graduated with a degree in Art History from Connecticut College and from there, went on to study design at Parsons. His many notable accomplishments include receiving the Isaac Mizrahi Gold Thimble Award from Parsons, being a two-time nominee for the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Emerging Talent, as well as a semifinalist in the first ever Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund initiative. He was the creative director of women’s wear and a consultant for Tommy Hilfiger after debuting his first collection at Bryant Park in 2001.
His talents shine through in his Resort 2013 collection, which features streamlined silhouettes and feminine chiffon day dresses. As usual, Som’s shapes are timelessly classic, allowing the immaculate fabrics that he chose for this collection to really stand out. Following an inspiration of wanderlust and the late actress Talitha Getty in Marrakech, Som chose to connect all of his pieces through the fabrics he used. A Moroccan-esque vine print can be seen on many of the pieces in this line, which intertwines all of the pieces without making a line that is too theatrical.
Following this season’s trend of effortless eveningwear, Som created two sophisticated outfits that would be appropriate for a formal or semi-formal event. Both sporting long silhouettes, the first features a pale blue lace material with a grosgrain belt; the other, a long, black jersey skirt paired with a roomy, sleeveless sequin top.
