Shockingly Artful Couture by Iris van Herpen

It’s a piece of art. It’s a coat. Its Iris van Herpen’s Spring 2013 Haute Couture Collection! Commencing the runway show in proper Herpen fashion, an extravagant introduction which included an epic electric display hardly overshadowed the designs that luxury designer Iris Van Herpen had up her sleeve.
Iris van Herpen’s most recent collection, aptly called "Voltage," is a true vision— not only in the sense of the style put forth, but also for the innovative design techniques on display. The show featured a dimly lit, live sculpture that stood in the center of the room in a black body stocking. Similar to something you would find in a Sci-Fi flick, long electrical sparks shot out of the performer’s body for several minutes. Talk about a memorable introduction.
The collection itself featured pieces with intricate details and an interesting combination of materials. Defying traditional design techniques, Iris van Herpen used 3-D printing on flexible fabrics. Of the newest Spring 2013 collection and her inspiration, van Herpen says that she was inspired by a childhood dream.
Still remaining true to her trademark tendrils that made her famous, this Dutch designer incorporated more delicate and demure aspects to her pieces. Known for producing garments that are difficult to picture off their displays, out of the 11 looks presented, there were actually a handful we could envision ourselves wearing.
This wonderland of a collection finished with a full-skirted mini dress made of spiked metal with broad shoulders and an open peep hole over the abdomen. The ensemble was an artful conclusion to a truly imaginative and spectacular line. With this collection, Iris van Herpen put on a show in every sense of the word.
