Could Spinali Designs' New Smart Bikini Eliminate Sunburns for Good?

There’s literally nothing we love more than being at the beach in the summer—our skin, however, might disagree with us. We love to worship the sun, but growing concerns over skin damage, cancer and even rapid aging are keeping us slathered in sunscreen and hiding indoors. Not fun. But in an attempt to save our skin (and our summer) French brand Spinali Designs has created a smart bikini that will alert you when you’ve had too much sun via a waterproof UV sensor and your smartphone. We know how it sounds, but trust us—it’s legit.

The bikini seems like something out of a Jetson’s episode, but it’s actually a pretty interesting little piece of wearable tech. The bikini calibrates by measuring UV exposure in the area and takes into account personal information like your skin type. Then it can assess when you need to reapply sunscreen, when the UV rays may be too strong to stay outdoors or when you’re getting dangerously close to a sunburn. You can also set it on “Valentine’s function” so your significant other receives the update and knows when it’s time to rub a little sunblock on your back, that way you don’t have to lift a finger.

Every Spinali swimsuit is also custom-made. Online, shoppers can select the top and bottom styles they prefer, and mix and match any number of cuts, colors and patterns to design a suit that’s right for them. Measurements are taken for a custom-fit and they even offer personalized tailoring advice if you have any questions or special requests before ordering. Each piece is make of Italian fabric, and sewn in France, so it does take about three weeks to be delivered (just in case you’re planning any last-minute getaways).

The idea of swimwear that could eliminate sunburns is great, but the general consensus from the medical industry is that it’s still best to limit time outside and wear protective clothing when you do venture outdoors—which makes total sense, but is not entirely feasible. Personally we’re not going to totally give up days at the beach or wear head-to-toe coverings during the warmer months. We’ll just have to call this a draw and remind ourselves to reapply when our bikini notifies us.

Spinali Designs are available online and priced at €149 (approx. $169).
