 Lagerfeld Goes Greek Home Décor: Now, a Chanel suit or Fendi bag aren't the only ways to collect something with Karl Lagerfeld's stamp on it - photographs and rare pieces from his personal decorative arts collection offer another way to own a piece of Lagerfeld's myth.
"European 20th Century Greek Revival," an exhibit of Lagerfeld's collection curated by Pierre Passebon, owner and curator of Galerie du Passage in Paris, features Grecian-style neoclassical vases made after World War I, various garden urns and austere benches and tables produced by the Swedish Nafveqvarn Foundry.
Also on display are provocative portraits taken by Lagerfeld featuring youthful male Adonises holding the vases from his collection.
"He wanted to do an exhibition in New York," said Pierre Passebon, curator and owner of Galerie du Passage in Paris, of Karl Lagerfeld's presentation of his photographs, vases and furniture at the Delorenzo Gallery in New York. "We did an exhibition with him in Paris a few years ago."
Does Passebon see a new trend of people collecting these particular eras of decorative art - 1920s French neo-classical vases and Swedish furniture?
"I don't know! I think that people really like it, but I don't think they know the Swedish [furniture] and the Ciboure [vases]. But I think they really like it - I hope!"
Lagerfeld's collection, all of which is for sale at the Delorenzo Gallery, features pieces he started collecting 15 years ago, for homes both near Hamburg and Biarritz, both of which he's recently sold.
"The most expensive is maybe this 17th century Swedish table, it's $100,000," said Passebon. "And the least expensive is a little cup by Ciboure, that's $400."
The photographs, unique prints done by Karl Lagerfeld, are $20,000-$25,000.
