Home Décor: Remember when you were a kid, watching The Jetsons and wishing your house could be that full of gadgets? Well the future may be here sooner than you think, with the "new" concept coffee table from Microsoft, Surface.
According to the Web site, "Microsoft Surface represents a fundamental change in the way we interact with digital content." With Surface, you don't need a keyboard or mouse; you can use natural gestures to transfer information. Surface is a large display screen that functions as a tabletop and allows people to work together or independently.
Surface has been a work in progress since 2001, when Microsoft workers began to brainstorm a way to make the physical and virtual worlds interact. From there, Surface was continually reborn in different tabletop forms, from an Ikea-based prototype in 2003 into increasingly sleek models and its most recent birth in 2007. The Web site promises that in the future Surface will be able to top any surface, from wall to countertop, in a variety of environments from private homes to public spaces, including schools and offices.
The Web site offers all kinds of hope for the possibilities Surface technology will make available, from sharing music with friends, to paying bills with credit cards and even using it for business purposes. The futuristic Surface website comes complete with a trio of videos that demonstrate the wonder of Surface technology, from private home and office use to business.
The Surface concept will be available mainstream in the next two years, but for now, check it out at www.microsoft.com.
