Seeds of Imagination

Luxury Home Decor: As a kid I made my fair share of mud pies and volcanoes made out of mounds of dirt. But, alas, I did not grow up to be a chef or volcanologist. While many of us contemplated entrepreneurship and shared big dreams with our childhood best friends, most of us go on to pretty regular jobs. But not Bennett Abrams and Gary Hanick, who began their career of making true-to-life replica trees in 1983 when they began experimenting with hardwood limbs and branches and other natural materials they found while exploring the forest. Instead of abandoning their dreams, their "sapling" trees earned recognition as objets d'art by major retailers Macy's San Francisco and Marshall Fields in Chicago.

Since then their artificial trees have gained popularity with architects and interior designers. Today, their work is found in museum exhibits, libraries, lobby designs, restaurant interiors, themed environments, residences and all sorts of interior landscapes. Abrams and Hanick, who formed the company NatureMaker, have seen their custom tree designs featured in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal and on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and HG/TV. Their careers really took off in the late 80s, when they created monumental interior trees or the Mirage and Buffalo Bills in Las Vegas. Not bad for a couple of guys from Idyllwild, California.
