Roberto Cavalli Attempts an Approachable Men's Collection for Fall/Winter 2015-16

This season was a toned down, monochromatic version of the Roberto Cavalli we see year after year, but his inspiration was no less flamboyant. His menswear Fall/Winter 2015-16 collection shown in Milan today was opulent, but approachable, a rarity in the world of Cavalli. Drawing from the Baroque period, he mixed his iconic rock ’n’ roll style with the French era, while dabbling in biker and cowboy elements with motorcycle and western boots to create a “Tuscan Prairie”—although this is far from the little house Laura Ingles Wilder lived in.

Models marched out with coifed locks and a swagger that said they knew they were badass. The words “No Bounds” and “Empathy” were pinned to their jackets, to “symbolize the elevated approach to life,” but really it just gave them a punk edge that played well with Cavalli’s overarching motif. Done in a single color palette, Baroque and animal prints could be seen in the tone-on-tone fabric, offset by embroidery, shading or velvet burnout. Decked out in sunglasses, cowboy boots and hefty fur coats, the models looked like a modern take on classic rockers.

Textiles were very Cavalli: fur, denim and leather came down the runway in spades. Fur was found on everything from cuffs and collars to interior lining and knee-length jackets. If the prairie element wasn’t obvious from the few western boots that went by almost unnoticed on the feet of the exuberantly dressed models, Cavalli made sure it wasn’t missed by mixing a few cow-print fur toppers into the collection.

Those looking for iconic Cavalli may want to pick up the fur coats, velvet cape and glittering animal print jackets, while those taking their first steps into the world of this Italian brand will find the understated monochromatic prints and leather pants easier to conform to their current collection. But for both seasoned fans and Cavalli virgins, may we suggest staying away from the cow print pimp coat?
