Upscale Shopping: Bergdorf Goodman is a luxury department store with a long history as a provider of unique indulgent goods.
In 1899, Edwin Goodman worked for Herman Bergdorf, an immigrant from Alsace, France, in his tailoring establishment just above Union Square in downtown Manhattan. By 1914, Goodman became the first couturier to introduce ready-to-wear, making Bergdorf Goodman the destination for premier American and French fashion.
Today, the store has an entire floor devoted to Jane Stubbs' first-edition and one-of-a-kind books and prints, along with a special collection of books from Assouline. Luxury stationers Smythson of Bond Street, along with a bridal salon and gift registry, are also housed there.
Bergdorf Goodman has expanded from its early days to include a luxury beauty division, including the John Barrett Salon and Susan Ciminelli Day Spa as well as a Beauty Level directly below the main floor, offering 15,000 square feet of luxury with eight spa rooms exclusively for facials, skincare consultations and special treatments, as well as Goodman's Cafe, serving lunch and afternoon tea.
Bergdorf Goodman's devotion to luxury designers includes special designer boutiques offering CHANEL, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, and Yves Saint Laurent. And in the last few years, BergdorfGoodman.com has made it possible to remotely shop for the luxury items found in the iconic New York store's location.
Bergdorf Goodman's legendary reputation for luxury extends to a personal shopper service, in which, "Meticulous attention to detail and the most informed advice on all matters of style are yours for the asking." The complimentary service "can do it all for you - from choosing cufflinks, crystal or chinchilla-trimmed capes to coordinating your outfit for any occasion."
