News & Trends: In combined homage to Coco Chanel and his love for the French-Russian aesthetic, Karl Lagerfield has created a short silent film for the luxury fashion house.
Explaining his reasoning for making the expensive and beautiful artwork, the German born head of Chanel tells Fashion Wire Daily, "There are so many films about Chanel being made this year. I thought it only right we make one. And with the Internet and thus people looking at silent images all the time, a silent movie seemed right. No?"
The film features model turned actresses Edita Vilkeviciute as a young beautiful Coco as well as fetish model Brad Koenig playing the Grand Duke, muse Lady Amanda Harlech, a wealthy client in the film, and favourite DJ Michel Gaubert.
The screening of the film took place right before the unveiling of Chanel's pre-fall collection, which was filled with Russian influences highlighted by the film.
Lagerfield said, "It has all the things I love about Russia - Imperial Russian style right up to Faberge, Constructivism and Russian folklore, and I got a chance to mix it all together."
The audience for the screening and consequential fashion show audience included actresses Amira Casar, Emmanuelle Seigneur, Isabelle Huppert and Anna Mouglalis, plus Princess Caroline of Monaco and a pack of French editors and TV hosts.
The two-part film illustrated not only Coco Chanel's impeccable eye for fashion, but for men as well, as she goes out with one man and winks at others along the way.
Each detail of the carefully crafted film reflected the careful care that goes into a Chanel collection, like the geometric pattern coats and military shoulders found on the latest Russian-inspired collection.
