News & Trends: Located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Jaquet Droz specializes in the art of watchmaking; Pierre Jaquet Droz established the elite company in 1738.
After being acquired by Swatch in 2001, Jaquet Droz has been established as central to the luxury and prestige market. Now Jaquet Droz has become a connection between the Age of Enlightenment and the third Millennium with Manuel Emch, President and head of artistic creation.
Recently Jaquet Droz partnered with Parsons New School for Design to find a winner for the inaugural Jaquet Droz Prize for Design. Parsons is based in New York City and emphasizes creative and critical approaches to finding solutions for life in the 21st century. Bengt Brümmer was chosen as the winner of the prize.
"Jaquet Droz Prize for Design enables us to give back to the design community by supporting an up and coming designer. This award honors a student who has shown creative execution, technical mastery and an appreciation for craftsmanship," says Manuel Emch, "I am impressed with Mr. Brümmer's work and believe he possesses the talent and vision to reshape the future of design, just as Jaquet Droz is redefining the landscape of fine timepieces."
The judge panel including experts in their fields: Jaquet Droz President and Creative Director Manuel Emch, Chief Curator of the Museum of Arts and Design David McFadden, renowned product designer Dror Benshetrit, gallery owner Marc Benda, Whitewall Magazine President Michael Klug, and Parsons Associate Professors Peter Wheelwright and Ken Stevens.
As the winner, Product Design student Brummer was awarded a top prize of $5,000 for his ability to embody the spirit and ideals of Jaquet Droz. Standout entries in the contest included the "Pop Bottle" and the "Flameless Cooker," designed to help in disaster relief efforts.
