Superyachts: Book Floats in at $3,950

Luxury Literature: Gloria Books' Superyachts, a coffee-table-size book, is an anthology on the history of yachts. The founder of Showboats International, Jim Gilbert, is the book's senior editorial consultant. Other renowned yacht experts contributing to this publication are Jack Somer, Mark Masciarotte, Louisa Beckett, and Marilyn Mower. The writing team is fleshed out with a group of acclaimed fashion, sports, and style writers.

Superyachts is divided into two parts. Part one covers the history and the development of yachts; the first time a yacht was viewed as a luxury sailing ship instead of a purposeful military vessel; and notes when milestone design and construction plateaus, such as going from wood to metal to composite hulls, were achieved. Leading yacht builders, naval architects, designers, and brokers also have offered their insiders' views. The second half of the book reports the lifestyles built around yachts and notable yachtsmen. The glitz and glamour generally associated with the "floating palaces" is explored as well.

Luxury yachts go back more than 3,000 years to the days of King Charles II of England. The very first yachts, which were made by the Dutch and called "jachts," were light, fast-sailing vessels used to track down ships of menacing pirates.

Superyachts has 648 full-color pages, and it is bound in silver Italian silk. It can be left on a sundeck or a fly bridge without becoming waterlogged, as the book comes in a watertight and see-through acrylic clamshell case. It is a limited-edition publication. Only 1,000 copies will be produced worldwide. Superyachts is available online directly through the publisher for $3,950.

Superyachts is the fledgling firm's second grand-scale publication. The mega-size Pelé, which is packaged similarly, was the firm's first effort of this mode. It, too, is available online and priced around $3,000.
