Clarke Quay Redesigned by Spark Architecture
By Sara Cardoza
Spark,an international architectural and design agency with many accolades for its work in architecture, urban design, landscape architecture and interior design garnered critical acclaim for its first major development in Asia, a dramatic, contemporary design located in the riverfront district of Clarke Quay in Singapore. Spark's innovative and visually catching structures are already succeeding in revitalizing the area and enticing tourists and residents alike back to the historic district. Seen here is an aerial view of this impressive project.
Clarke Quay By Night
According to Spark, the company is "driven by a philosophical approach to create architecture that is pragmatic, social, and convivial," and works closely with clients "to create sustainable architecture to improve the quality of life for all."
Critical Acclaim For Clarke Quay Design
In 2007 Spark won the Cityscape Architectural Review Award for its work in Clarke Quay. In 2008 it won the Cityscape Asia Awards for Best Waterfront Development and an accolade from Bentley Systems Sustaining Society Innovation under the heading for commercial buildings.
Revitalized Commercial and Social District
The historic Clarke Quay, situated on the riverfront, functioned as a commercial center for barges and boats carrying goods during the colonial era. Now, beneath the shade of Spark's dazzling, geometric, umbrella-like lights, patrons can dine at numerous restaurants, enjoy a drink at several bars and lounges, and indulge in some shopping.
Sophisticated Climate-Control System
An important element of the project was the inclusion of a sophisticated micro climate system. Aside from visual appeal, some of the components work to reduce the ambient temperature of the quayside and streets by four degree Celsius.
The "ceiling" of the design works in conjunction with an innovative fan known as the "whale tail," (named for its shape) to help moderate the humid temperature. This allows visitors to enjoy eating outside the area's many cafes and restaurants.
Stimulating Social Attraction in Singapore
Spark's work in Clarke Quay has significantly revived the area's industry. The dynamic use of color, form, and function has helped bring conformity and urban cool to this riverfront district.
